This day was established by the UN in 2009 as a call to end use of nuclear weapon testing and to highlight the catastrophic effects that it has had throughout history. Nuclear testing began in 1945 with nearly 2000 tests since. The testing, “impacts on the environment, health, food security and economic development.” — UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The UN resolution aims to increase awareness and education on the effects of nuclear explosions in hope of bringing about a  nuclear-free world.
